At 32 weeks, Elizabeth Herzog’s daughter Georgia was born premature, weighing a mere 3.5 lbs.

The first-time mom brought Georgia, who was 5 months old at the time, to an Iowa restaurant. During her meal, she began breastfeeding her daughter like she normally does. Only this time, she was left feeling embarrassed and humiliated by the staff.

Since Georgia is particularly fragile, she doesn’t like to cover the baby’s face with a nursing blanket.

According to Iowa law, “a woman may breastfeed the woman’s own child in any public place where the woman’s presence is otherwise authorized.”

Elizabeth is well aware of the stigmas attached to breastfeeding in public but is hoping stories like hers will bring more acceptance.

“I’m doing the best I can, and I realize to some people it might look a little weird. And I realize, to some people, they might be shocked by it. But all I’m trying to do is nurse my infant,” she told WQAD.

Elizabeth was sitting at her table and breastfeeding her baby when the manager approached her. He tapped her on the shoulder and said something that made the mother get up and leave.
