Jay Leno Performs For The First Time After Suffering Serious Burns In Gasoline Fire

Jay Leno has already launched his comeback just two weeks after he was left with serious burns in a gasoline fire.

Jay Leno launched his comeback on Sunday night two weeks after he suffered severe burns to his face and hand in a gasoline fire.

‘I Feel Good’

People Magazine reported that Leno, 72, took the stage last night to perform at the The Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, California.

“I never thought of myself as a roast comic,” the former “Tonight Show” host joked as he arrived at the gig. “We have two shows tonight — regular and extra crispy.”

“I feel good, thanks you guys,” he added.

Leno reportedly performed for over an hour, with members of the audience saying that his set was a huge success.

“He looked great and he had a lot of stamina,” one person in the audience said afterwards, adding that Leno was “full of energy” while he was onstage, and that he “told joke after joke after joke.”

Daily Mail reported that Leno has been performing at this venue almost every Sunday since the early 1990s, and he would often use it to test out “Tonight Show” monologues during his time hosting the late night show.

Leno’s Fire

Leno was working on a steam engine under a 1907 White Steam Car in his garage in Burbank when the fire broke out on the afternoon of Saturday, November 12. He had to be pulled from underneath the vehicle by firefighters afterwards, and he spent the following nine days being treated at the Grossman Burn Center.

“I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire,” Leno said in a statement after the fire. “I am OK. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet.”

Leno has been passionate about cars for decades, and he even worked as a mechanic in his younger days to pay his bills while he tried to make it as a standup comic. The comedian owns 180 vehicles in his garage including exotic cars, hypercars and museum-grade artifacts, according to US News & World Report, and his collection is estimated to be worth between $50 million and $100 million.

Doctors Weigh In

Dr. Peter Grossman, who treated Leno personally, said that the comedian was lucky that he didn’t experience nerve damage.

“Some of the burns to the face are a little deeper and a little more concerning,” Grossman said shortly after the fire. “I do anticipate him making a full recovery. Whether they’ll be remnants of this injury, it’s still too early to tell. I’d say that his injuries are serious, his condition is good.”

Doctors at the burn center were overjoyed when they were able to release Leno nine days after the fire.

“Jay would like to let everyone know how thankful he is for the care he received, and is very appreciative of all of the well wishes,” they said at the time. “He is looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with his family and friends and wishes everyone a wonderful holiday.”

Leno will still need to be treated for third degree burns in the weeks and months to come, but the fact that he’s already performing again bodes well for his overall recovery. He is scheduled to perform at The Comedy and Magic Club again on December 4, 11, and 18. Tickets for these dates are on sale now.
